But Mourinho beat him to it and, unable to sprint past his coach, the forward felt obliged to hug him instead. In reality, however, the Portuguese pair endured a rocky relationship from the outset at Madrid, with Mourinho sensing an air of over-confidence from Cristiano in their talks and the player unhappy at criticism and perceived negative tactics from his coach.
Bust-ups between them were frequent, even in Mourinho's first season at the club.
Since initially joining Mourinho on the coaching staff at Uniao de Leiria in 2000, their partnership has proved to be fruitful wherever they have gone and has produced an abundance of silverware domestically in a number of countries and in Europe.
And Mourinho has no doubt that if Faria were to leave Chelsea one day, he would have no problem in returning to Stamford Bridge and succeeding him in the future.
Mourinho saw a kindred spirit in Faria, and when he took the União de Leiria job in April 2001, he hired Faria as his assistant and fitness coach.
Since then, the two have been inseparable, with Faria joining Porto in January 2002, Mourinho's first month in charge of his new club.
Faria left Chelsea in late 2007, following Mourinho out of the club, and joined him at Internazionale in the summer of 2008.
