Ukip’s media spokesman Patrick O’Flynn MEP, a former political editor of the Daily Express who quit journalism to pursue a career in politics, said: “George Osborne is a curious appointment having almost no journalistic experience, having failed as a chancellor and bringing the Treasury into disrepute with his Project Fear campaign during the referendum.
“But the one thing he is clearly good at is networking.
Meanwhile Lord Bew, the chairman of the Committee on Standards in Public Life, is also expected to raise concerns after claiming he is “uncomfortable” with Osborne’s latest appointment.
He said: “We have not ruled out MPs having second jobs, quite deliberately until now, but we now have to look again at our rules.“We are going to discuss whether rules on second jobs need to be changed in the light of this. It now seems to be getting into rockier waters.”The former Chancellor has faced a number of calls to quit as an MP since the news of his new editor role emerged.
In October 2009, the paper ended a 180-year history of paid circulation and became a free newspaper, doubling its circulation as part of a change in its business plan. Under the ownership of James Johnstone, The Standard became a morning paper from 29 June 1857.
The Evening Standard was published from 11 June 1859.
In the 1960s, the paper was now upstaged by The Evening News, which sold over 1 million copies nightly.
Critics have suggested there could be a conflict of interests and some MPs have demanded tighter rules on MPs’ additional jobs.
Once the newsagents have taken them off the shelves, how do you find the back issue newspaper you need?
The newsagents don’t keep a copy, nor (usually) do the newspaper groups, many of which direct such enquiries straight through to us. Here are some of the reasons why our customers buy a back dated newspaper.
We classify backdated newspapers as being those papers up to 9 months old.
Nearly 90% of back issues purchased are from the past month.
